Sacred Heart Announces Two National Merit Semi-finalists & One Commended Student
Sacred Heart Catholic High School is pleased to announce the naming of Daniel Barron and Cody Blackledge as a National Merit Semifinalists, and Sarah McClain as a Commended Student by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) officials. As semifinalists, Barron and Blackledge join more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 60th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. As a commended student, McClain is one of 34,000 who placed in the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
At Sacred Heart Catholic High School, Barron serves as Captain of the Mathletes Team and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of the National Beta Club and served as the club’s vice-president in 10th grade. He has participated in the Mississippi Science and Mathematics Tournament and earned 1st and 2nd place honors in 9th and 10th grades, respectively. Barron has served on the yearbook staff and was the videographer for the varsity football team for two years. He plans to obtain a degree in Computer Science. Barron is the son of Liz and Jim Barron of Hattiesburg.
Blackledge serves as senior class treasurer and is a member of the National Beta Club and Latin Club. He served as junior class treasurer and played football in the 9th and 10th grade. Blackledge is a U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Airman First Class and works part-time in his father’s law office. He plans to obtain a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Blackledge is the son of Mary Beth and Reggie Blackledge of Collins.
McClain is the Sacred Heart Catholic School Student Body President and a member of the National Beta Club, National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She participates in Future Business Leaders of America and Campus Ministry Team. McClain was a member of Sacred Heart’s State Champion Mock Trial teams in 2013 and 2014, and Sacred Heart’s State Champion Girls Soccer team in 2013 and 2014. She was a State Champion Track Relay Team member in 2011 and 2012 and serves as co-captain of the varsity volleyball team. Sarah plans to attend Vanderbilt University or the University of Virginia and major in Child Psychology. She is the daughter of Pam and Carr McClain of Hattiesburg.
