Sacred Heart Catholic High School senior Sohbian Thriffiley has been named a National Merit Semifinalist by officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation. He is one of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.

At Sacred Heart Thriffiley is a member of the STEM Team and Quizbowl Team. He placed in the top 20% of competitors at the Mississippi Math and Science Competition, and has also competed in the Future Business Leaders of America’s regional competition, placing 1st in Sports Management. He serves as reporter for Mu Alpha Theta and is a member of the Student Council and Beta Club. Thriffiley is a varsity football and powerlifting letterman for Sacred Heart as well.

As a volunteer, Thriffiley has worked with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Association, and has served as an intern in the University of Southern Mississippi’s Psychology Department Zebrafish Neurology Lab.  He is the son of Lhay and Tate Thriffiley of Hattiesburg. Thriffiley plans to attend The University of Alabama or Florida State University and major in Engineering.
