Sacred Heart Catholic School (SHS) offers its students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade a solid foundation centered on faith and values with a focus on individual growth, academic excellence, and community service. As early as Pre-Kindergarten, children participate in curriculum designed to instill passion for lifelong learning and the love of reading. As they progress to middle school, students are engaged in a balance of fiction and nonfiction by studying individual works of literature. In high school, students transition to language arts by reading rhetoric, analytical and argumentative writing, and more.
Evidence that the love of reading exists at SHS is through the high school Book Club. Last year, two students asked Ms. Walls, Social Studies faculty, to start a book club. Within two months, the club grew to 20 members! Fast forward to 2022, thirty-five members now participate in the Book Club where students read titles that include, "All The Light We Cannot See", "My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry", and "The Giver." There are no tests, no annotations, just the joy of reading good books selected by the students.
Over 250 SHS students complete the ACT each school year. The reading average of all students scored 3 points higher than the national average and 2 points higher than national college readiness benchmarks. This includes our youngest test takers scores (7-9th grade). When compared to Mississippi reading scores, SHS scores are 5 points higher. Based on other standardized reading tests from April, SHS students scored at or above grade level when compared to national averages:
